Best Management Practices (BMPs)

Posted over 2 years ago

Best management practices are guidelines for management activities that are generally accepted by agriculture and the regulatory community as standard and preferred farming methods and activities.

  • PLAN
  • SAMPLE
  • ANALYZE
  • IMPLEMENT

The following are manure management BMPs for your farm:

  • Have a plan, develop your own or hire a consultant to develop a manure management plan
  • Take regular manure samples and send them to a testing lab
  • Use your farm’s manure and soil analyses as the guide for all manure application and management decisions
  • Make application and management decisions that are agronomically reasonable and environmentally practical

Manure is the original fertilizer and a commodity that continues to increase in value, but there can be challenges to manure storage, transportation and application. By developing a manure management plan and incorporating manure management BMPs, you can enhance manure use efficiency and environmental conservation.
